There are properly, suited businessmen, briefcases at their feet, riding to work helmet on and plenty of all kinds of couples dressed in what to my mind is inappropriate scooter wear which includes: footwear that encloses the foot, long pants and a helmet. BUT, here like in many other places, Mexico comes to mind, you see all sorts of scooter riding going on. Finding a vantage point from which to photograph some of these sightings would have been my preference, BUT there was no safe place. Just enough room on the street for a car to pass a pedestrian carrying bags and then a scooter would squeeze by leaving no room for the casual photographer trying to be unobtrusive. So here are some descriptions to conjure the riders in your mind. It would be great to see a film, camera stays still on some picturesque corner while these scooter riders pass from all directions.
Three teenage girls, all made up, looking good, the one in front drives, the one in the middle engaged in conversation on her cell phone, the one in the back gesticulates with both hands explaining to the driver about a just avoided near miss. No helmets.
Seven year old boy in front standing, mother in the middle drives, twelve year old boy on the back in uniform tosses his football up and down in his hand. No helmets.
Two men, man in front driving with one hand while half turned to man on the back. Man on back left cheek on driver’s left shoulder talking into his ear. Both are using their hands to communicate. No helmets.
Two women, thirty something, the one in front drives; the woman on the back carries a bright pink bag and a helmet. No helmets.
Woman with a bright red designer helmet drives while her 12-year-old blonde son hangs on the back no helmet.
Deliveryman with 10 six packs of water in front of him as he drives, no helmet.
Deliveryman with giant bag of bread in front of him as he drives.
3 generations: daughter in front drives, mother in the middle, grama hangs on tight on the back. All substantial women, no helmets.
Out with the kids: 5year old child in front, father drives mother on the bak the seven year old is sandwiched in between. No helmets
Man with all white track suit white high tops white scooter….pretty much invisible.
Man with unruly grey hair, short sleeve pink shirt, shiny silver runners, baby blue scooter.
Out with the newborn: man in front drives, women on back holds her newborn baby in both arms, no helmets.
Two men, both in dark suits one driving in front, very large big screen TV between him and the man in the back who steadies the load.
Woman all in frilly white outfit, high heeled sandals, white scooter bright pink helmet at he feet.
Maybe eight years old small, longhaired girl standing in the front of the scooter that is three times the size of her driving around a bit too fast. Unaccompanied, no helmet.
Spotted from the bus: Maybe twelve year of very blonde boy unsteadily passes our bus on the left. Between our bus and the oncoming traffic, two lanes, a very steep hill as his maybe seven-year-old brother clutches him in terror, burying his head in his back. No helmets.
Scooter watching in Naples became a source of thrills, entertainment, and horror. This activity could generally astound and occupy one for endless hours.
